Should Christians Drink Alcohol? Let’s Talk About It 🤍
Should Christians Drink Alcohol Let’s Talk About It
I have gone back and forth on writing this because I know this topic can bring a lot of opinions.
Some people say absolutely not.
Some say it is okay.
Some carry pain from alcohol.
Some grew up around it.
And some quietly wonder the question:
Should Christians drink alcohol?
I do not think I am the only one asking.
If I am honest, alcohol was a big part of my younger years.
I drank a lot.
The environment I was in, the people around me, the lifestyle… it was normal.
Parties were normal.
Hangovers were normal.
Waking up feeling awful and promising yourself you would never do it again… only to repeat it later… felt normal too.
Back then, I do not think I stopped long enough to ask myself why I was drinking.
Was it fun?
The people?
The environment?
Wanting to fit in?
Trying not to think?
Maybe a little of everything.
But life changed.
Faith changed me.
And today things look different.
I still drink occasionally.
But not to get drunk.
Not to lose control.
Usually one or two drinks… maybe three at most.
I do not get drunk anymore.
I do not wake up hungover.
And that shift made me really sit with this question differently.
Because the Bible actually talks about alcohol more than people realize.
Jesus turned water into wine.
Paul told Timothy:
“Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.”
— 1 Timothy 5:23
Wine existed in biblical times.
But the Bible also gives very strong warnings.
“Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.”
— Ephesians 5:18
“Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise.”
— Proverbs 20:1
And this is where I think many of us wrestle.
Because scripture seems to show that alcohol itself is not always presented as sin…
But drunkenness, losing control, addiction, and being mastered by something — those are warned against.
So then comes the harder question:
What is your relationship with it?
Because maybe for one person, one drink is fine.
For another person, one drink opens a door they fought hard to close.
For another person, it brings back old habits.
For another, it becomes comfort instead of God.
Romans reminds us:
“Everything that does not come from faith is sin.”
— Romans 14:23
And I think that verse makes this conversation deeply personal.
For me?
I had to ask myself:
Am I drinking to enjoy a moment?
Or am I drinking to escape one?
Am I free?
Or is this leading me?
Because those are two very different things.
I also think we need more grace in these conversations.
Less judgment.
More honesty.
Because some people are carrying addiction stories.
Some are carrying family trauma.
Some are carrying conviction.
Some are carrying freedom.
And maybe the answer is not exactly the same for everyone.
But I think we all need to ask God:
Lord, is this bringing me closer to You or further from You? Should Christians Drink Alcohol Let’s Talk About It
Because that answer matters.
What is your relationship with alcohol? Have you ever sat with this question honestly before God?
