Step Out in Faith Trusting God with the Next Step

"She said, 'Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.'" — Ruth 1:16 (NIV)

What If the Next Step Feels Scary?

Have you ever felt God nudging you to do something, but fear convinced you to stay where you were?

Maybe it's sharing your faith with a friend.

Starting the ministry He's placed on your heart

Applying for a new job.

Forgiving someone who hurt you.

Walking away from something that's keeping you from Him.

Or simply taking a step you know He's been asking you to take.

If you're waiting until you have all the answers, all the confidence, or a detailed plan before you move, you may be waiting forever.

One of the hardest parts of walking by faith is realizing that God doesn't usually reveal the entire journey before asking us to take the first step.

He simply says,

"Trust Me."

Why We Stay Where We Are

Fear has a way of making comfort feel safer than obedience.

It whispers:

"What if I fail?"

"What if I make the wrong decision?"

"What if people think I'm crazy?"

"What if I'm not qualified?"

"What if I heard God wrong?"

"I'll move once I have more certainty."

But here's the truth:

Faith and certainty are not the same thing.

If we could see every detail of God's plan, it wouldn't require faith.

Ruth Chose Faith Over Familiar

When Ruth's husband died, her future suddenly became uncertain.

She could have stayed in the place she knew.

Instead, she chose something far more difficult.

She left her homeland, her family, and everything familiar to follow her mother-in-law, Naomi, into an unknown future.

More importantly, Ruth chose to trust the God Naomi worshiped.

She didn't know what tomorrow would hold.

She didn't know where she would live.

She didn't know how God would provide.

She simply took the next faithful step.

That single act of obedience became part of God's incredible redemption story.

Ruth couldn't see it then, but God was already weaving her story into something far greater than she could have imagined.

God Doesn't Ask You to Have All the Answers

One of the biggest misconceptions about faith is believing we need complete clarity before we obey.

But throughout Scripture, God often invited people to move before revealing the full picture.

He rarely handed them the entire map.

Instead, He gave them enough light for the next step.

Sometimes we ask God to explain every detail before we're willing to obey.

But walking by faith means trusting the One leading us more than the path in front of us.

Step Out in Faith Trusting God with the Next Step

God doesn't ask you to have all the answers—He asks you to trust Him with the next step.

Faith Grows When You Move

Faith isn't built while standing still.

It's strengthened when we choose obedience, even when we feel nervous.

That doesn't mean every step will be easy.

Sometimes obedience leads to waiting.

Sometimes it brings unexpected challenges.

Sometimes you won't understand what God is doing until much later.

But every step of obedience deepens your trust in Him.

You don't need to know the entire journey.

You only need to trust the One who already does.

What If You're Afraid You'll Get It Wrong?

Many believers quietly wrestle with this question.

"What if I'm not hearing God correctly?"

That's a wise question to ask.

God will never lead you to do something that contradicts His Word.

As you spend time in Scripture, pray, seek wise biblical counsel, and draw close to Him, you grow in your ability to recognize His leading.

You may not have every answer, but you can trust that God is able to guide humble hearts that genuinely desire to follow Him.

He is faithful.

One Step Can Change Everything

Don't let fear convince you that you have to know the entire plan before taking action.

You don't need perfect confidence.

You don't need every answer.

You don't need to eliminate every fear.

You simply need to be willing to say,

"Yes, Lord."

That one step may become the beginning of a story only God could write.

Reflection

• What step has God been placing on your heart?

• Is fear keeping you comfortable when God is inviting you to trust Him?

• What would your life look like if you believed God would walk with you every step of the way?

Prayer

Father,

Thank You for always going before me. So often I want certainty before obedience, but You invite me to walk by faith instead of by sight.

When fear tells me to stay comfortable, give me the courage to trust You. Replace my doubt with confidence in Your promises, my anxiety with Your peace, and my hesitation with a willing heart.

Help me remember that I don't have to know the entire journey because You already do. Teach me to trust You with the next step, even when I cannot see where the path will lead.

Thank You for Your faithfulness, Your guidance, and Your unfailing love.

Ask God to reveal one step of obedience you've been avoiding because of fear.

Then take that step.

It doesn't have to be a giant leap.
