Exodus 12 — The Passover & Israel Leaves Egypt

Summary

Exodus 12 is one of the most important chapters in Exodus. God prepares Israel for the final plague—the death of the firstborn—and gives them instructions for the very first Passover.

Each Israelite household was told to take a lamb without defect, sacrifice it, and place some of its blood on the sides and tops of their doorframes. That night, God would pass through Egypt in judgment. When He saw the blood on the door, He would pass over that home.

At midnight, every firstborn in Egypt died, including Pharaoh’s firstborn son. After this devastating plague, Pharaoh finally told Moses and the Israelites to leave Egypt.

After hundreds of years in Egypt, God’s people walked out of slavery.

God also instructed Israel to remember the Passover for generations to come so they would never forget how He rescued them.

Observations

1. God provided a way of protection before judgment came.

2. God’s timing may feel slow, but His promises are still being fulfilled.

3. God wanted His people to remember what He had done.

Life Application

There may be seasons when you feel like you have been waiting forever for God to change something.

Israel certainly understood waiting.

But Exodus 12 reminds us that God can change a situation very quickly when His appointed time arrives.

One night they were slaves.

By the next day, they were leaving Egypt.

Your waiting season does not mean God has forgotten you.

Continue trusting Him. Continue obeying Him. Continue remembering the things He has already done in your life.

God is faithful even when the promise feels delayed.

 Questions 

1. Is there an area of my life where I am struggling to trust God’s timing?
2. What has God already brought me through that I need to remember today?
3. Is God asking me to obey Him in something even though I cannot yet see the outcome?

Exodus 12:13 (NIV)

“The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you.”

Encouragement

If you have been praying and waiting for God to move, do not assume that silence means He has forgotten you.

Israel waited for freedom for generations, but God knew exactly when their deliverance would come.

He heard their cries.

He remembered His promises.

And when the time came, no Pharaoh could stop what God had decided to do.

The same God who was faithful then is still faithful today.

Keep trusting Him, even while you wait.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being faithful to Your promises. Thank You for reminding me through Exodus 12 that You see Your people, You hear our cries, and You have not forgotten us.

Help me trust Your timing when I do not understand what You are doing. Give me the faith to obey You even when I cannot see what will happen next.

When I become discouraged, remind me of the times You have already carried me through.

Thank You for Your protection, Your mercy, and the freedom You give.
