Summary
Exodus 17 shows us two powerful moments in Israel’s journey through the wilderness.
First, the Israelites camp at Rephidim, but there is no water to drink. Instead of trusting God after everything He has already done for them, they begin to complain and argue with Moses. They even question whether God is really with them.
God tells Moses to take his staff, go to the rock at Horeb, and strike it. When Moses obeys, water comes flowing from the rock, providing enough for the people to drink.
Later, the Amalekites attack Israel. Joshua leads the Israelites into battle while Moses stands on a hill holding up the staff of God. As long as Moses keeps his hands raised, Israel is winning. When his arms grow tired and begin to fall, Amalek starts winning.
Aaron and Hur come alongside Moses, give him a stone to sit on, and hold up his hands until sunset. Joshua and Israel defeat Amalek.
Moses then builds an altar and names it “The LORD is my Banner.”
Exodus 17 reminds us that God provides what we need, fights battles we cannot fight alone, and often uses other people to help strengthen us along the way.
Observations
1. The Israelites questioned God even after seeing His faithfulness.
2. God provided water from an unexpected place.
3. Moses needed help holding up his hands.
Life Application
Exodus 17 challenges us to trust God even when we do not immediately see the answer.
You may be standing in a season that feels like Israel at Rephidim.
You know God has been faithful before, but right now you are wondering:
“God, where are You?”
“God, how are You going to provide?”
“God, how am I going to get through this?”
Remember what God has already done.
The same God who provided manna can bring water from a rock.
The same God who brought Israel out of Egypt can give them victory in battle.
And the same God who carried you through your previous seasons has not disappeared in this one.
Also remember that you do not have to fight every battle alone.
Allow trusted people to pray for you, encourage you, and help hold you up when you are tired.
Questions
- Where do I need to trust God to provide even though I cannot see how the answer will come?
- Who are the “Aaron and Hur” people in my life who help strengthen me when I am tired?
Memory Verse
“Moses built an altar and called it The LORD is my Banner.” — Exodus 17:15 NIV
Encouragement
Just because you cannot see the provision yet does not mean God has forgotten you.
Israel saw a rock.
God saw water.
Israel saw an enemy.
God saw victory.
Moses felt tired.
God sent Aaron and Hur.
Whatever you are facing today, God already sees what you cannot see.
Keep trusting Him.
Your wilderness is not proof that God abandoned you.
Sometimes the wilderness becomes the place where you learn just how faithfully God provides.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for always being faithful, even when I become afraid or uncertain.
Forgive me for the times I allow my circumstances to make me question whether You are with me.
Help me remember everything You have already brought me through.
When I cannot see the answer, teach me to trust that You are still working.
Provide for me in the places that feel empty.
Strengthen me in the battles that leave me tired.
And thank You for the people You place in my life to encourage me, pray for me, and help hold me up when I feel weak.
You are my Provider.
You are my Defender.
You are my Banner.
I trust You to lead me through every wilderness and every battle.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen. 🤍
