Exodus 2 — God Is Working Behind the Scenes
Summary
Exodus 2 introduces us to Moses during a dangerous time for the Israelites. Pharaoh had ordered every Hebrew baby boy to be thrown into the Nile, but Moses’ mother hid him for three months. When she could no longer hide him, she placed him in a basket among the reeds of the Nile.
Pharaoh’s daughter discovered Moses, had compassion on him, and eventually raised him as her own son. Through God’s amazing provision, Moses’ own mother was chosen to nurse and care for him before he went to live in Pharaoh’s household.
When Moses grew up, he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew man. Moses killed the Egyptian and hid his body. After Pharaoh learned what happened, Moses fled Egypt and settled in Midian.
There, Moses defended a group of women at a well and eventually became part of their family. He married Zipporah, and they had a son named Gershom.
Meanwhile, the Israelites continued suffering in Egypt. They cried out to God—and God heard them. He remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Exodus 2 ends by reminding us that even when it seems like nothing is changing, God sees, hears, and cares.
Observations
1. God can protect His purpose in unexpected ways.
Moses was born under a death sentence, yet God preserved his life. Even more amazingly, Moses was raised inside Pharaoh’s own household—the very place connected to the command to kill Hebrew boys.
What looked impossible became part of God’s plan.
2. Being called by God does not mean we should move ahead of God.
Moses cared about the suffering of his people, but killing the Egyptian was not God’s way of delivering Israel.
Moses had the desire to help, but he still needed preparation. His years in Midian would become part of that preparation.
3. God hears the cries of His people.
The Israelites had suffered for years, and it may have seemed like God had forgotten them.
But Scripture tells us:
“They groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God.” — Exodus 2:23 NIV
God heard them.
Their situation had not changed yet—but God was already preparing Moses.
Life Application
Sometimes we assume God is not working because we cannot see anything happening.
Exodus 2 reminds us that God may be arranging things long before we recognize what He is doing.
Moses was being protected.
Moses was being positioned.
Moses was being prepared.
And God was listening to Israel.
If you are in a season where you have been praying and waiting, don’t mistake God’s silence for His absence. You may not see the answer yet, but God can be working behind the scenes in ways you cannot see.

Encouragement
You do not have to see God working to know that He is working.
The Israelites were crying out in Egypt while Moses was living in Midian. They couldn’t see that God was already preparing the person He would use to help deliver them.
Your waiting season may contain preparation you cannot see yet.
God sees you.
God hears you.
God remembers His promises.
And God is still working.
Father, thank You for reminding me that You are working even when I cannot see it. Help me trust Your timing instead of trying to rush ahead of You. When I feel forgotten, remind me that You see me and hear my prayers. Prepare me for what You have planned and give me faith while I wait. Help me trust that Your purpose is greater than what I can see right now. In Jesus’ name, amen.
