Exodus 27 — The Altar, the Courtyard & the Lamp Oil

Exodus 27 — The Altar, the Courtyard & the Lamp Oil

Summary

Exodus 27 continues God’s instructions for the tabernacle. In this chapter, God gives Moses specific directions for building the altar of burnt offering, the courtyard surrounding the tabernacle, and providing pure olive oil for the lamp.

The altar was where sacrifices would be offered to God. It stood outside the tabernacle and reminded the Israelites that approaching a holy God required sacrifice.

God also gave detailed instructions for the courtyard. The tabernacle was not thrown together casually. Every measurement, curtain, post, and piece had a purpose.

At the end of the chapter, God commands the Israelites to bring pure olive oil so the lamps could remain burning continually. Aaron and his sons were responsible for tending the lamps before the Lord.

Exodus 27 reminds us that worship involves sacrifice, holiness, obedience, and continual devotion to God.

 Observations

1. Sacrifice came before entering deeper into God’s presence.

2. God cared about the boundaries of His dwelling place.

3. The lamp was meant to keep burning.

Life Application

Exodus 27 challenges us to look at the way we approach God.

The Israelites could not simply walk into the tabernacle however they wanted. God provided a way for them to approach Him.

Today, we have access to God through Jesus.

Because of Jesus, we can come before God in prayer, worship Him, ask for forgiveness, and have a personal relationship with Him.

But access to God should not make us take His presence for granted.

The continually burning lamp also gives us a beautiful picture of consistency.

Our faith should not only become important when life gets difficult.

God wants to be part of our everyday lives.

Keep praying.

Keep reading His Word.

Keep seeking Him.

Keep the flame of your faith burning.

Questions

  1. Am I approaching God with gratitude and reverence, or have I started taking His presence for granted?
  2. What areas of my life need to be more fully surrendered to God?
  3. What can I do consistently to keep my relationship with God growing?

Memory Verse

Exodus 27:20 (NIV)

“Command the Israelites to bring you clear oil of pressed olives for the light so that the lamps may be kept burning.”

Encouragement

Your relationship with God does not have to be built on dramatic moments.

Sometimes faith grows through the quiet, consistent things.

Opening your Bible.

Whispering a prayer.

Choosing obedience.

Trusting God one more day.

The lamp in the tabernacle required continual care.

Your faith does too.

You may not feel spiritually strong every day, but keep showing up.

God can use small acts of faithfulness to build something beautiful in your life.

Keep the flame burning.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for making a way for me to come into Your presence.

Thank You for Jesus and for the sacrifice He made so that I could be forgiven and have a relationship with You.

Help me never take Your presence for granted.

Teach me to live a life that honors You and reflects Your holiness.

Help me stay consistent in prayer, in Your Word, and in seeking You even when life becomes busy or difficult.

When my faith feels weak, strengthen me.

When I become distracted, draw my heart back to You.

Help me keep the flame of my faith burning and continue walking closely with You every day.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
