Exodus 33 — God’s Presence Changes Everything

Exodus 33 — God’s Presence Changes Everything

Summary

Exodus 33 takes place right after Israel’s serious sin with the golden calf. God tells Moses that the people can still move toward the Promised Land, but because of their stubbornness, His presence will not go with them in the same way.

That news devastates the Israelites.

Moses continues meeting with God in the tent of meeting, where Scripture says the Lord would speak with Moses “face to face, as one speaks to a friend.”

Moses does not simply want God’s blessings or the Promised Land—he wants God Himself.

Moses tells the Lord that if His presence does not go with them, he does not want to move forward.

God promises Moses that His presence will go with him and give him rest.

Then Moses makes an incredible request:

“Now show me your glory.”

God allows Moses to experience a glimpse of His glory while protecting him from seeing the fullness of His presence.

Exodus 33 reminds us that the greatest gift God can give us is not a destination, blessing, opportunity, or answered prayer.

It is His presence.

Observations

1. God’s Presence Is More Valuable Than His Blessings

2. Moses Had a Personal Relationship With God

3. Moses Wanted More of God

Life Application

Ask yourself today:

Am I seeking God’s presence, or am I mostly seeking what I want Him to give me?

There is nothing wrong with bringing our needs to God. He invites us to do that.

But Exodus 33 reminds us that our prayer can go deeper.

Instead of only praying:

“God, give me the opportunity.”

We can pray:

“God, go with me.”

Instead of only praying:

“God, fix this situation.”

We can pray:

“God, help me recognize Your presence while I walk through it.”

Instead of only praying:

“God, bless my plans.”

We can pray:

“God, I do not want to go anywhere You are not leading me.”

Sometimes the greatest answer to prayer is not God immediately changing our circumstances.

Sometimes it is realizing that He is walking through them with us.

 Questions

  1. Is there something I want so badly that I have become more focused on the blessing than on God?
  2. What would it look like for me to make spending time in God’s presence a priority this week?
  3. Is there an area of my life where I need to pray, “God, if You are not leading me there, I do not want to go”?

Memory Verse

Exodus 33:14 (NIV)

“The LORD replied, ‘My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.’”

Encouragement

You do not have to know every step ahead.

You do not have to have everything figured out.

Moses was leading an entire nation through uncertainty, yet the thing that gave him confidence was not knowing exactly how everything would happen.

It was knowing God would be with him.

The same is true for us.

You may not know what comes next.

You may be waiting for an answer.

You may be walking into a new season.

You may even feel unsure about the direction your life is going.

But instead of asking God to show you the entire road, you can ask Him to remind you that He is with you on it.

His presence is enough for the next step.

Father,

Thank You for Your presence.

Sometimes I become so focused on the things I am praying for that I forget the greatest gift I have is You.

Help me desire You more than the blessings You can give me.

Like Moses, I want to know You more deeply.

Guide my steps and keep me from going anywhere You are not leading me.

When I feel uncertain, remind me that Your presence goes with me.

Give me rest when I am anxious, peace when I am unsure, and faith when I cannot see what comes next.

Show me more of who You are and help me recognize Your presence in my everyday life.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
