Genesis 37 — Joseph’s Dreams & Betrayal
Summary
Genesis 37 begins the story of Joseph, one of Jacob’s sons. Jacob loved Joseph deeply and gave him a special robe, which caused Joseph’s brothers to become jealous and resentful.
Joseph then had dreams that seemed to reveal that one day his family would bow down to him. When he shared these dreams, his brothers’ hatred grew even stronger.
Later, Jacob sent Joseph to check on his brothers while they were tending the flocks. When they saw Joseph coming, they plotted to kill him. Reuben convinced them not to take his life, so instead they threw Joseph into an empty cistern.
Eventually, his brothers sold Joseph to traveling merchants, who took him to Egypt. To hide what they had done, the brothers dipped Joseph’s robe in goat’s blood and allowed Jacob to believe Joseph had been killed by a wild animal.
The chapter ends with Joseph being sold in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh.
Joseph’s circumstances changed completely—but God’s plan for his life had not.
Observations
1. Jealousy can grow into something destructive.
Joseph’s brothers allowed jealousy and bitterness to build until it influenced their actions. Genesis 37 reminds us to deal with resentment before it takes root in our hearts.
2. God can reveal a promise before we understand the process.
Joseph received dreams about his future, but what happened next looked completely opposite to those dreams. Sometimes God gives us a glimpse of where He is taking us without showing us everything we will experience along the way.
3. A setback does not mean God’s plan has stopped.
Joseph went from being his father’s favored son to being sold into slavery. Yet this painful journey would eventually place him exactly where God would use him.
Life Application
There may be seasons when your life looks nothing like what you hoped or prayed for.
Joseph could have looked at the cistern, the betrayal and the journey to Egypt and believed everything was ruined. But Genesis 37 was not the end of Joseph’s story.
The same is true for us.
We may not understand why God allows certain doors to close, relationships to change or plans to fall apart. But we can trust that God sees the entire story while we only see the chapter we are currently living.
Don’t judge God’s plan by one difficult chapter.

- Is there any jealousy, bitterness or resentment in my heart that I need to surrender to God?
- Am I trusting God even when my current circumstances don’t match what I hoped for?
- What situation in my life do I need to stop viewing as “the end” and instead trust God with?

Encouragement
The pit is not the end of your story.
Joseph couldn’t see what God was doing when his brothers betrayed him. He didn’t know where the journey to Egypt would eventually lead.
And sometimes we won’t understand our own difficult seasons either.
Keep trusting God. What feels like a detour may become part of the path God uses to bring you exactly where you need to be.
Father, thank You for reminding me that You are still working even when I cannot see what You are doing. Help me trust You when my circumstances don’t make sense. Remove jealousy, bitterness and resentment from my heart, and help me walk faithfully through every season. When I feel discouraged, remind me that one difficult chapter does not determine the ending of my story. I trust You with what comes next. In Jesus’ name, amen.
