Genesis 40 — God Is Working in the Waiting
Summary
While Joseph is in prison, Pharaoh’s cupbearer and baker offend Pharaoh and are placed in the same prison where Joseph is being held.
One morning, Joseph notices that both men look troubled. They explain that they each had a dream but have no one to interpret them.
Joseph responds:
“Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.”
— Genesis 40:8 NIV
The cupbearer tells Joseph his dream about a vine with three branches. Joseph explains that the three branches represent three days. In three days, Pharaoh will restore the cupbearer to his position.
Joseph then asks the cupbearer to remember him when he is restored and to mention him to Pharaoh because Joseph was unjustly imprisoned.
The baker hears the positive interpretation and tells Joseph his dream too. Unfortunately, his dream has a different meaning. Joseph tells him that in three days, Pharaoh will execute him.
Three days later—on Pharaoh’s birthday—everything happens exactly as Joseph said.
The cupbearer is restored.
The baker is executed.
But then comes the painful ending:
“The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.”
— Genesis 40:23 NIV
Joseph helped someone who had the ability to help him—and that person forgot him.
Joseph would have to keep waiting.
But God had not forgotten Joseph.
Observations
1. Joseph continued serving even while he was hurting.
Joseph had his own problems, yet he noticed when the cupbearer and baker were troubled. His difficult circumstances didn’t stop him from caring about others.
2. Joseph gave God the credit for his gift.
When asked about the dreams, Joseph didn’t present himself as the source of the interpretation. He immediately pointed them toward God: “Do not interpretations belong to God?”
Joseph understood that his gift came from the Lord.
3. Being forgotten by people doesn’t mean you’ve been forgotten by God.
The cupbearer forgot Joseph after being released from prison. From Joseph’s perspective, this probably felt like another disappointment. But God was still writing the story.
The cupbearer would eventually remember Joseph—at exactly the moment his gift was needed.
💗 Life Application
One of the hardest things to do is remain faithful when you’ve been waiting for something to change.
You pray.
You obey.
You keep showing up.
And still…nothing seems to happen.
Genesis 40 reminds us that waiting doesn’t mean God isn’t working.
Joseph probably thought the cupbearer was his way out of prison. But when the cupbearer forgot him, Joseph remained there.
What Joseph couldn’t see was that God’s timing was bigger than simply getting Joseph out of prison.
God was preparing to bring Joseph before Pharaoh.
Sometimes we ask God to open a door immediately, while God is preparing something we can’t see yet.
Don’t mistake God’s timing for God’s absence.

- How do I respond when God makes me wait longer than I expected?
- Am I still willing to serve others while I’m waiting for my own prayers to be answered?
- Is there something I’m trying to rush that I need to place back into God’s hands?

🤍 Encouragement
Maybe you’ve been praying about something for a long time.
Maybe you thought a certain person, opportunity, or situation was finally going to be your breakthrough—and then nothing happened.
Joseph knew that feeling.
He asked the cupbearer to remember him.
But the cupbearer forgot.
God didn’t.
And when the right moment came, the very person who forgot Joseph would become part of God’s plan to move him forward.
So if you’re in a waiting season today, remember:
People may forget you. Opportunities may pass you by. Your timeline may change. But God has not forgotten you.
Keep being faithful where you are.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for reminding me that You have not forgotten me.
Sometimes waiting is difficult, especially when I don’t understand why things haven’t changed yet. Help me trust Your timing instead of becoming discouraged by what I cannot see.
Teach me to remain faithful where You have placed me. Help me continue serving, loving, and using the gifts You’ve given me even while I’m waiting for my own prayers to be answered.
When I feel overlooked or forgotten, remind me that You see me and that You are still working behind the scenes.
Give me patience for the waiting and faith for what comes next.
