Genesis 44 — Joseph Tests His Brothers
Summary
Genesis 44 continues Joseph’s story in Egypt. After providing food for his brothers, Joseph secretly has his silver cup placed in Benjamin’s sack. Once the brothers leave, Joseph sends his steward after them and accuses them of stealing.
The brothers are confident none of them took the cup and agree that whoever has it should face punishment. But when the sacks are searched, the cup is found in Benjamin’s sack.
The brothers are devastated and return to Joseph. Judah steps forward and pleads for Benjamin’s life. He explains how deeply losing Benjamin would hurt their father, Jacob. Judah then makes an incredible offer: take me instead and let Benjamin go home.
This chapter shows just how much Judah and the other brothers have changed since they sold Joseph years earlier.
Observations
1. Joseph tested whether his brothers had truly changed.
Years earlier, the brothers were willing to sacrifice Joseph and return home without him. Now they are given a similar opportunity with Benjamin—but this time, they refuse to abandon their brother.
2. Judah demonstrates sacrificial love.
Judah once participated in selling Joseph into slavery. Now he offers to become a servant himself so Benjamin can go free. His actions reveal genuine growth and repentance.
3. God can transform a person’s heart.
The brothers who once acted out of jealousy and selfishness are no longer behaving the same way. Genesis 44 reminds us that our past does not have to determine how we respond today.
Life Application
Sometimes God allows situations that reveal how much we have grown.
You may encounter circumstances that feel strangely similar to something you’ve experienced before—but this time, you respond differently. Maybe you’re more patient. Maybe you choose forgiveness. Maybe you trust God instead of panicking.
Don’t overlook that growth.
God may be doing something in your heart that you couldn’t see until the test revealed it.

- Is there an area of my life where God has been showing me how much I’ve changed?
- Am I willing to put someone else’s needs before my own, like Judah did for Benjamin?
- When I’m tested, does my response reflect the person I used to be—or the person God is helping me become?

Encouragement
Your past doesn’t cancel the growth God is producing in you.
Judah had made serious mistakes, but Genesis 44 shows us a different Judah. God was changing him.
Maybe you look back and wish you had handled certain situations differently. Instead of living in regret, pay attention to who God is helping you become now.
You may not respond perfectly every time, but growth matters.
Father, thank You for not leaving me where I used to be. Continue changing my heart and helping me grow. When I face situations that test my character, help me respond with love, wisdom, humility, and faith. Teach me to put others before myself and to trust what You are doing even when I don’t understand the situation. Thank You for being patient with me as You shape me into the person You created me to be. In Jesus’ name, amen.
