Genesis 47 — God Provides in Every Season
Summary
Genesis 47 shows Jacob and his family settling in Egypt during the severe famine. Joseph presents some of his brothers and his father to Pharaoh, and Pharaoh allows the family to live in Goshen, one of the best areas of Egypt.
As the famine worsens, Joseph wisely manages Egypt’s food supply. The people eventually exchange their money, livestock, land, and labor for food. Meanwhile, Jacob’s family is provided for in Goshen, where they gain possessions, have children, and increase greatly.
Jacob lives in Egypt for 17 years. As he realizes his life is nearing its end, he asks Joseph to promise that he will not bury him in Egypt but will return his body to the burial place of his fathers.
Observations
1. God can provide for you in an unexpected place.
Egypt wasn’t Jacob’s promised homeland, yet God used it as a place of protection and provision during the famine. Sometimes God’s provision comes from places we never expected.
2. God’s people grew during a difficult season.
Genesis 47:27 says the Israelites acquired property and were fruitful and increased greatly. The famine was still happening around them, but God was still growing them. Hard seasons don’t stop God from producing growth.
3. Jacob never forgot where he truly belonged.
Even after living comfortably in Egypt for years, Jacob wanted to be buried with his ancestors. He remembered God’s promises and understood that Egypt was not the final destination.
Life Application
You can be in a season that feels unfamiliar and still be exactly where God is providing for you.
Sometimes we think blessing means God immediately removes the difficult circumstances. Genesis 47 shows something different: God can sustain you, protect you, and grow you while the difficult season is still happening.
Don’t judge God’s faithfulness only by what is happening around you. Look at what He is producing within you and through you.
Questions
- Where have I seen God provide for me in an unexpected way?
- Am I overlooking growth because I’m focused on what is difficult right now?
- What promise from God do I need to keep trusting even when my circumstances look different than expected?
📝 Memory Verse — Genesis 47:27
“Now the Israelites settled in Egypt in the region of Goshen. They acquired property there and were fruitful and increased greatly.”
🦋 Encouragement
Your environment does not limit God’s ability to grow you.
Jacob’s family was living through a famine, yet they were still fruitful. Whatever season you’re walking through today, remember: God can provide in it, protect you through it, and produce growth from it.
Father, thank You for being my provider in every season. Help me trust You when life looks different from what I expected. Open my eyes to the ways You are already caring for me and growing me. When circumstances around me are difficult, remind me that they do not limit what You can do in my life. Help me hold tightly to Your promises and trust where You are leading me. In Jesus’ name, amen. 🤍
