Summary

Genesis 50 brings us to the final chapter of Genesis. 🤍

After Jacob dies, Joseph mourns deeply for his father. Jacob is embalmed in Egypt, and Joseph receives Pharaoh’s permission to take his father back to Canaan to bury him in the cave at Machpelah, just as Jacob requested.

After the burial, Joseph’s brothers become afraid.

They wonder: Now that our father is gone, will Joseph finally get revenge for everything we did to him?

But Joseph responds with forgiveness. Instead of seeking revenge, he recognizes something powerful: although his brothers intended to hurt him, God used what happened for a greater purpose.

Joseph reassures them that he will continue caring for them and their children.

The chapter—and the entire book of Genesis—ends with Joseph’s death at 110 years old. Before dying, Joseph expresses his faith that God will eventually bring His people out of Egypt and back to the land He promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Joseph dies in Egypt, but he dies believing God’s promise.

Observations

1. Joseph chose forgiveness instead of revenge

Joseph had every reason, from a human perspective, to remain angry.

His brothers betrayed him, sold him into slavery, and changed the course of his life.

But when they feared Joseph would retaliate, he comforted them.

Forgiveness didn’t change what happened. It changed what Joseph allowed the past to control.

2. God can bring purpose from something painful

Genesis 50 contains one of the most powerful statements in Joseph’s entire story:

“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good…” — Genesis 50:20 (NIV)

Joseph wasn’t saying what his brothers did was good.

Their actions were wrong.

But their wrongdoing wasn’t powerful enough to stop God’s plan.

God took Joseph’s painful journey and ultimately used his position in Egypt to save many lives during the famine.

3. Joseph died still trusting God’s promise

Joseph had lived most of his life in Egypt, but he knew Egypt wasn’t the final destination for God’s people.

Before his death, he told his family that God would come to their aid and bring them out of Egypt.

Joseph didn’t live to see that promise fulfilled.

But he believed it anyway.

And that sets us up perfectly for our next book…

Exodus. 🤍

Life Application

Genesis 50 reminds us that we don’t always understand God’s plan while we’re living through it.

Think about Joseph.

The pit didn’t make sense.

Being sold didn’t make sense.

The false accusation didn’t make sense.

Prison didn’t make sense.

Being forgotten didn’t make sense.

But God never stopped working.

Looking backward, Joseph could finally see how God had been moving through circumstances that once looked hopeless.

Maybe you’re in a chapter of your life that doesn’t make sense yet.

You don’t have to understand the entire story to trust the One writing it.

God can still bring purpose from places that caused you pain.

 Questions 

1. Is there someone I still need to forgive and release to God?
2. Can I identify a painful season where I can now see how God worked through it?
3. What promise of God do I need to keep believing, even if I haven’t seen the answer yet?

We finished Genesis! 🥹🤍

50 chapters.

We started with creation.

We walked through Noah.

We met Abraham and watched him learn to trust God’s promises.

We followed Isaac.

We watched Jacob grow and change.

And then we walked through the incredible story of Joseph.

Through every generation, one truth kept appearing:

God is faithful.

Thank you for following along with me chapter by chapter. You guys are helping me more than you know by going through God’s Word with me.

And we’re not stopping here.

Father,

Thank You for bringing us through the entire book of Genesis.

Thank You for showing us through Joseph’s life that our painful seasons are never beyond Your ability to redeem.

Help me forgive when forgiveness is difficult. Help me release the things I cannot change and trust You with the parts of my story I still don’t understand.

When I cannot see what You are doing, remind me that You are still working.

Give me faith like Joseph to believe Your promises even when I haven’t seen their fulfillment yet.

As we close Genesis and prepare to begin Exodus, continue opening my heart to Your Word. Help me grow closer to You with every chapter I read.
