Summary
Leviticus 11 teaches us about holiness, obedience, and what it means to live a life set apart for God.
In this chapter, God speaks to Moses and Aaron, giving the Israelites specific instructions about which animals they could eat and which animals they were not allowed to eat.
God explained that land animals needed to have divided hooves and chew the cud to be considered clean. Animals that did not meet both requirements were considered unclean.
For creatures living in the water, the Israelites were permitted to eat those with fins and scales. God also identified certain birds and insects that were clean or unclean.
The chapter goes on to explain how touching the carcasses of unclean animals could make a person ceremonially unclean and what they needed to do to become clean again.
Although these instructions may seem unusual to us today, they served an important purpose for the Israelites.
God was teaching His people that they belonged to Him and that their everyday choices mattered.
Even something as ordinary as eating food became an opportunity to remember their relationship with God.
One of the most important messages in this chapter comes when God reminds the Israelites that He is holy and calls them to be holy as well.
As Christians, we are not required to follow Israel’s Old Testament dietary restrictions under the new covenant. Through Jesus Christ, we are called to pursue holiness through faith, love, obedience, and a transformed heart.
Leviticus 11 reminds us that following God is not limited to worship services or moments of prayer. Our relationship with Him should influence every area of our lives.
Observations
1. God Calls His People to Be Different
2. Obedience Matters in Everyday Life
3. Holiness Begins With Our Relationship With God
Life Application
Leviticus 11 challenges us to think about what it means to live a life that honors God.
We may not follow the same dietary laws given to the Israelites, but the message of holiness still applies to our lives today.
Think about the choices you make throughout your day.
Are your words encouraging or hurtful?
Are your decisions guided by God’s Word or by what everyone else is doing?
Are you allowing God to transform your heart, or are there areas of your life you are still holding back from Him?
Living a holy life does not mean pretending to be perfect.
It means recognizing that we belong to God and choosing, through His grace, to grow closer to Him each day.
This week, focus on one area of your life where you can become more intentional about honoring God.
Maybe that means spending more time in prayer, showing patience toward someone, letting go of an unhealthy habit, or choosing kindness when it would be easier to respond with frustration.
Remember, spiritual growth often happens through small, consistent steps of faith.
Questions
- What does living a life set apart for God look like in my everyday routine?
- Are there habits, attitudes, or choices in my life that I need to surrender to God?
- How can I become more intentional about reflecting God’s holiness through my words and actions?
📖 Memory Verse (NIV)
Leviticus 11:45
“I am the LORD, who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy, because I am holy.”
Encouragement
Friend, you do not have to be perfect to belong to God.
Maybe you have been struggling with certain habits, making mistakes, or feeling like you are not where you should be in your faith journey.
I want to remind you that growing in faith is a process.
God is patient, merciful, and faithful.
He does not expect you to transform your entire life overnight.
Instead, He invites you to walk with Him daily, allowing His Word to guide your decisions and His love to change your heart.
There will be days when you feel strong in your faith and days when you struggle.
But do not give up.
Keep praying. Keep reading your Bible. Keep seeking Him.
Every time you choose forgiveness instead of bitterness, kindness instead of anger, or obedience instead of your own desires, you are taking another step toward spiritual growth.
You belong to a holy God who loves you deeply.
And through Jesus Christ, you can continue growing into the person He is calling you to become.
One day, one prayer, and one chapter at a time.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for loving me and calling me to live a life that honors You. Help me recognize the areas of my life where I need to grow. Give me wisdom to make choices that reflect Your truth, love, and holiness. Teach me to walk in obedience, even in the small things. Continue transforming my heart and drawing me closer to You each day.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
