Summary
Exodus 15 begins right after God miraculously parts the Red Sea and delivers the Israelites from Pharaoh’s army.
Moses and the Israelites respond by singing a song of praise to the LORD. They celebrate who God is, what He has done, and the power He displayed in rescuing His people. Miriam, Moses’ sister, also leads the women in worship with tambourines and dancing.
But only three days later, the Israelites enter the wilderness and cannot find drinkable water. When they finally reach Marah, the water is bitter, and the people begin complaining to Moses.
Moses cries out to God, and God shows him how the bitter water can be made drinkable. God uses this moment to teach Israel that He wants them to listen to Him, obey Him, and trust Him.
The chapter ends with the Israelites arriving at Elim, where there are twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees.
They went from celebration, to testing, to provision.
Observations
1. We should praise God for what He has already done.
2. Yesterday’s miracle does not automatically remove today’s fear.
3. God can turn bitter situations into places of provision.
Life Application
Exodus 15 teaches us something important about faith:
Praise God in the victory, but trust Him in the wilderness too.
It is easy to praise when the Red Sea has just opened.
It is harder when you have been walking for three days and cannot see the provision you need.
But God is still God in both places.
Maybe you are in your own “Marah” season right now. Something you expected to bring peace has turned out differently than you hoped.
Do not assume the bitterness means God has abandoned you.
Keep praying.
Keep trusting.
Keep walking.
Your current situation may simply be one stop along the journey.
God knows where your Elim is.
Questions
- What is something God has already brought you through that you need to thank Him for today?
- When circumstances become difficult, do you usually pray first or complain first?
- Is there a “bitter” situation in your life that you need to surrender to God and trust Him with?
Memory Verse
Exodus 15:2 NIV
“The LORD is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation.”
Encouragement
The Israelites did not know Elim was ahead while they were standing at Marah.
They could only see bitter water.
God could see the entire journey.
Remember that when you are discouraged.
You may only be able to see what is happening today, but God already knows what is ahead.
The God who brought you through one battle has not forgotten how to carry you through the next one.
Keep trusting Him. 💕
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for every situation You have already brought me through. Forgive me for the times I quickly forget Your faithfulness when another problem appears.
Help me trust You when life feels uncertain and when things do not turn out the way I expected.
When I find myself in a bitter season, remind me that it is not necessarily my final destination.
Teach me to pray instead of complain, praise instead of panic, and remember that You are still with me in the wilderness.
Thank You for being my strength, my provider, and my salvation.
In Jesus’ name, amen. 🤍
