Summary
Exodus 16 takes place after God has already delivered the Israelites from Egypt and brought them through the Red Sea. Now they are in the wilderness, and food is becoming scarce.
Instead of remembering how faithfully God had already provided for them, the Israelites begin complaining to Moses and Aaron. They even say they would rather have died in Egypt, where at least they had food.
God hears their complaints and responds with provision. He sends quail in the evening and a special bread from heaven called manna each morning.
But God’s provision also comes with instructions. The Israelites are only supposed to gather what they need for each day. On the sixth day, they are to gather twice as much because the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest.
Some people still try to save extra manna overnight or go searching for it on the Sabbath, showing that trusting God’s instructions was still something they needed to learn.
Exodus 16 teaches us that God provides what we need, but He also wants us to trust Him one day at a time.
Observations
1. The Israelites quickly forgot what God had already done.
2. God provided daily bread, not a lifetime supply.
3. Rest was part of God’s provision.
Life Application
Sometimes we want God to show us the entire plan.
We want to know how everything will work out next month, next year, or even five years from now.
But Exodus 16 shows us a God who often gives us enough grace for today.
Like manna in the wilderness, His provision may come one day at a time.
Instead of asking, “God, how am I going to handle everything ahead of me?” we can learn to pray, “God, give me what I need for today.”
Tomorrow will have its own manna.
Questions
- Is there an area of my life where God may be teaching me to trust Him one day at a time?
- Do I truly believe that rest is part of trusting God, or do I feel like everything depends on me?
Memory Verse
“Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘I will rain down bread from heaven for you.’”
— Exodus 16:4 NIV
Encouragement
You may not know where tomorrow’s provision is coming from, but neither did the Israelites.
Every morning they stepped outside and discovered that God had already gone before them.
The same God who provided manna in the wilderness is still able to provide exactly what you need.
You do not have to carry tomorrow today.
Trust Him for today’s manna. 💕
Father, thank You for being my Provider. Forgive me for the times I complain, worry, or forget everything You have already done for me. Help me trust You one day at a time. Teach me to recognize Your provision, obey Your instructions, and rest knowing that You are taking care of me. When I cannot see what tomorrow holds, remind me that You are already there. In Jesus’ name, amen. 🤍
