Exodus 5 — When Obedience Makes Things Harder Before They Get Better
Summary
In Exodus 5, Moses and Aaron finally go before Pharaoh with God’s message: “Let my people go.”
Instead of listening, Pharaoh becomes angry. He accuses the Israelites of being lazy and makes their work even harder. They are now required to gather their own straw for making bricks while still producing the same number of bricks each day.
The Israelite leaders are beaten when they cannot meet the quota. Frustrated and discouraged, they blame Moses and Aaron for making their situation worse.
Moses then turns to God and asks why things have become harder when he was only doing what God told him to do.
This chapter is such an important reminder that obedience does not always bring immediate relief. Sometimes things seem to get worse before we begin to see what God is doing.
Observations
1. Pharaoh resisted God’s authority.
2. Obedience did not make Moses’ circumstances easier right away.
3. Moses brought his disappointment directly to God.
Life Application
Have you ever done what you believed God wanted you to do and then wondered why things became harder?
Exodus 5 reminds us not to judge God’s plan based only on what is happening in the moment.
Moses was standing at the beginning of one of the greatest deliverance stories in the Bible, but at this point, it certainly did not look like victory.
The Israelites only saw heavier workloads.
Moses saw angry people blaming him.
Pharaoh believed he was still completely in control.
But God had not changed His promise.
Sometimes we are looking at one difficult chapter while God already knows the ending.
Keep obeying Him even when you cannot yet see the result.
Questions
- When circumstances do not go the way you expected, do you pull away from God or bring your questions to Him?
- Is there an area of your life where you need to trust God even though you cannot see how He is working yet?

Encouragement
If things feel harder right now, do not automatically assume God has abandoned the situation.
Exodus 5 ends without freedom.
There is no miracle yet.
There is no celebration.
There is only pressure, disappointment, and questions.
But the story is not over.
God was still working.
And whatever chapter you are walking through today is not necessarily the final chapter either.
Keep trusting Him.
Father, sometimes I struggle when I obey You and things do not turn out the way I expected. Help me trust You even when circumstances seem to get worse before they get better. When I am confused, disappointed, or afraid, remind me that I can bring every question directly to You. Give me the faith to keep walking with You even when I cannot see what You are doing yet. Help me remember that Your promises are not dependent on what my circumstances look like today.
