Genesis 46 — God Goes With You Into the Unknown
Summary
Genesis 46 begins with Jacob—also called Israel—preparing to leave Canaan and travel to Egypt after learning that Joseph is alive.
Before continuing the journey, Jacob stops at Beersheba and offers sacrifices to God. That night, God speaks to him in a vision and tells him not to be afraid to go to Egypt. God promises to go with him, make him into a great nation there, and eventually bring him back.
Jacob then travels to Egypt with his entire household, possessions, livestock, children, and grandchildren.
The chapter lists the members of Jacob’s family who went with him, showing how the small family God had chosen was beginning to grow into the nation He had promised.
Then comes the emotional moment: Joseph finally reunites with his father. Joseph meets Jacob in Goshen, embraces him, and weeps for a long time.
After years of believing Joseph was dead, Jacob finally sees his son alive.
The chapter ends with Joseph preparing his family to meet Pharaoh and explaining how they should describe themselves as shepherds so they can settle in the land of Goshen.
Observations
1. Jacob sought God before entering a new season.
Jacob didn’t simply rush to Egypt because Joseph was there. He stopped at Beersheba and worshiped God first. Even when an opportunity looks like a blessing, we can still bring it before God.
2. God told Jacob, “Do not be afraid.”
Egypt represented a huge change. Jacob was leaving the land he knew, but God’s reassurance wasn’t that everything would be familiar—it was that God would be with him.
3. God was working through the entire family story.
The long list of Jacob’s descendants may seem like just a list of names, but it matters. God had promised Abraham that his descendants would become a great nation. Genesis 46 shows that promise continuing to unfold.
Life Application
Sometimes God’s answer to our prayers leads us into a season that still feels scary.
Jacob received incredible news: Joseph was alive! But receiving that blessing also meant leaving home and walking into the unknown.
You can be excited about where God is leading you and still feel nervous about getting there.
Genesis 46 reminds us that we don’t need to know everything about the next season before entering it. We need to know who is going with us.
If God is leading you, His presence goes with you.

- Where do I need to trust that God is already working ahead of me?

Encouragement
You don’t have to fear where God is leading you when you know God is going with you.
Jacob couldn’t see everything that would happen in Egypt, but God already knew the entire story.
The same is true for you.
A new season may feel unfamiliar. A change may feel uncomfortable. You may not understand why God is allowing your path to look different than you expected.
But unfamiliar does not mean God is absent.
Sometimes the place that feels uncertain is exactly where God continues fulfilling His promises💕
Father God, thank You for reminding me that I never have to walk into a new season alone. When I feel afraid of change or uncertain about what comes next, help me remember that You are already there. Teach me to seek You before making decisions and to trust Your direction even when I cannot see the whole plan. Give me courage to follow where You lead and faith to believe that Your promises are still unfolding in my life. In Jesus’ name, amen. 🤍
